ok so...... drum roll please.....
voila, double dutch is officially open!
my friend christin kelley and i opened this little pop-up shop and
we're so excited to see where it goes...

basically we're doing baby steps to get it up and running but it's been so fun and care-free that i'm not stressed about it at all. hooray! the best part is that i feel like it truly reflects us as real people. it's not all so perfectly staged and sterile which i think makes it really accessible to customers who are a lot like us. pretty cool, right?

so, as a little product shout-out today i'm highlighting
my favorite item in the shop this month: the infinity scarf...

this fantastic thing is handmade by christin's mom and is one of my favorite accessories since getting my own a couple months ago. i even got one for my mom for her birthday and people have been asking where they can get their own – so naturally we put it in the shop. (if you've been hanging around me lately you know this scarf all too well since i wear it constantly.)

so, we'll keep updating the shop and letting you know about the cool stuff we list once the ball really gets rolling – until then we hope you enjoy and spread the word!

whew, this is going to be another long one
so grab a mug of something and hang out for a bit –

as promised i'm back with detailed info about melanie's
stand: organic fields and french hens at the reading fairgrounds farmers market...
i am so looking forward to helping melanie get the word out
about her baked goods and tasting them along the way...

here's melanie bringing us our taste-test of the week.
she has so many incredible edible things i just can't stand it.

and speaking of, our taste of the week was her fresh blueberry vanilla cake...

(see that note with the ingredients, only 120 calories in my half of the cake!)

man, it was amazing and beautiful, too!
you know how you never really believe that something that has so little fat/calories could actually be decadent, moist and delicious?
well, my tongue had the proof – it was so good i was shocked.
oh, i just i can't wait until i have a party and stock it up with her goodies to share with friends!

unfortunately, this week and next (26th-28th & 2nd-4th) melanie will not be at the market but she will return by the week after and just in time for valentine's day so be sure to go and get some for yourself or you and your sweetheart. thanks again, melanie - you're awesome!

pssst. anyone ever been to the fairgrounds market?
well, wowee i had no idea!
renningers is great for antiques but i tell ya, fairgrounds farmers market really has it beat for food selection and diversity.
so, the lovely christin kelley and i met up for lunch and i got to meet another melanie of fields and french hens! she was so sweet and her organic baked goods were amazing...

i tried her cowboy cookie below and it was fantastic. just like a wonderful homemade chocolate chip cookie but with oats and seeds and all kinds of stuff to make you feel good and not guilty!

i loved how it was flat and thin but moist and had that stick-to-your-teeth buttery-like chewy texture. mmmmmmmmm my favorite. i also tried the organic coffee coconut cookie and it was so delicously sticky/chewy i forgot to take a pic before it was gone! ooops.

well so, now the plan is to show you a new sweet-treat every week to help promote melanie and her delicious goods! + next time i'll take my camera with me–

whoa, i think 2012 is going to be my year!

it's all seems to coming together and i guess have successfully flooded the market with my work – uh, can't you tell with all this publicity? sheesh!

and better homes and gardens has my work
in the background of a photo shoot!

awwww darn.
i know having free-range chickens is risky and you must always prepare for death on all fronts – but man it's still a bummer when you find your girl-friend chewed up on a dreary night.
RIP ladyhawk. we will miss your funny personality and the way you would chase the mail lady.

this time it was no fox. this time {almost too fitting for her name} it was a monster hawk. and almost out of spite that darn hawk only ate her little neck and left her body untouched. at least mrs. fox was feeding her young - naturally we felt better about that.

so i plucked her feathers and plan to roast her for christmas.
we decided it would be the best way to honor her. then in the quiet morning rain as i pulled her beautiful green and orange feathers i had a moment where i felt as if i was doing what so many people had done before in the yard of this old house and that somehow it made me more connected. and i guess more than anything... i thank her for that.

my "bless this" print is featured in a lowes creative ideas project!

we get this lowes creative ideas issue every once and a while and to my surprise when i flipped the latest one open i found my print in a master bedroom big reveal!

(aaaaaggg – the colors of the room even match the print!
i may have to use this as inspiration for my own spare room.)

then i logged online at the website and checked out the entire story – so cool!
as it turns out , lowes is following a young couple (becky and derek) on how they choose renovate their first home with the lowes creative ideas team. i LOVE the idea and i LOVE that they have my print hanging in that beautiful new room!

so, this year at thanksgiving my grandma brought
a bunch of these gingham aprons and let us choose our favorites...
the pics are from the impromptu photo shoot (thanks, aunt mary!)
(some were delicate, some had pockets, some were pleated,
some were just simple and fun,
and the long red one even had a long poem about pa dutch life!)

as it turns out, my great-aunt martha made these aprons
by the dozens and i can see why – they're so fun, cute and easy!
i love them! she chose such great color combos,
obviously got really into it, and ended up making this
lovely collection which we were all so thankful for!
agggg! i can't wait to curl up this winter by the fire and make my own...

after checking out all the details i see how truly great they are.
why so great, you might ask?

1) the gingham checks help you create your own pattern and keep it straight.
2) you can use small gingham and make lettering to make it special!
3) choosing bright colors and contrasting thread means you can use the pattern over and over but each one can be unique and special!
4) i find in projects like this that keeping simple structure can actually allow for more creativity and all the love will be in the details!

here's to continuing the tradition –
oh, my great grandkids/nieces will be so happy some day...

hey again friends,
hope everyone had a great thanksgiving!

so, in leu of the time of year –
i have to give up some thanks for the support i've been receiving lately...

first off, the artstar craft bazaar holiday show was great! i've actually gotten so many notes, orders, and contacts afterwords that it totally would have been worth it even if i didn't sell a thing while i was there. gotta love that.

one of those little notes was from ladyott saying she was going to post my goods as one of her favs from the show! hooray! thanks lady ott!

this past weekend we celebrated my mom's 60th birthday!
and i guess we've started a little tradition of making heartfelt/tear-jerking slide shows – here are some of my favorites from my mom's early life ...

it's really a lovely thing to put photos to music and see how powerful it can be. i'm realizing more and more how important taking photos is for the people who come after you. every time i find a new picture of my parents from the past it shows me a little more into who they were outside of being my mom or dad and i find that so important now.
thank goodness for milestones and reflections.

hello there!
so here's a lengthy catch-up post from my part of the woods –

first, look at that pretty bird. sheesh do i LOVE my chickens. i mean come on, just the other day i was bringing them hot oatmeal and thinking what spoiled chickens i have – but boy do they pay me pay back in funny company. they all have such wonderful personality!

we brought their hen house up close to the garden this fall to be sure they're safe and comfy when it gets really cold.
hopefully they'll lay all winter like our past birds.

best part about them up by the house is they'll all come to hang
while we stack wood or do yard work.

and even using the nest box like a good girl...

what else can i say. they're awesome.

look at these fantastic mitcher's whiskey pedestal mugs she gave me for my birthday!

LOVE.

also, christin and i made the most amazingly easy DIY xmas gift project ever.
here's our little review...
hand-made vanilla extract

got these great glass flasks at reading china and glass for a $1 a piece!

(you could use any bottles but these were our most favorite)

then all you need is inexpensive vodka and vanilla beans!

slice each bean down the center.

next fill the jar with vodka and plunk the beans in!
(also you can make some cosmos while you work)

then you just let them sit in a cool dark place for 2 months.
perfect, cause that's exactly how much we have 'til xmas.
scary, huh?

so, we super duper recommend this DIY. it was so fun and easy and there was no mess to clean up in the end. plus. vanilla extract can be so expensive so anyone who gets a big bottle like this will be thrilled. i also plan to make an illustrated how-to tag so everyone who gets one can make their own once it's gone. how fun, right?
i'll post the tags and completed bottles once they're finished.

whew, ok that was a good catch-up – now back to work for me!

happy snow-melting monday!
whew, that storm was kinda nuts, huh! we lost many of our ornamental pear trees and our power for about 24hrs or so. it was sad about the trees but definitely romantic with candles lit and just the fireplaces burning on saturday night. sunday we spent the day with friends sitting in their yard making snowmen and literally watching the snow melt. i think i got a sunburn from all the reflection. somehow the snow relaxed me and got me ready to jump-start this busy week.

so, this morning i entered the 2012 world tour sketchbook project
and i must say that i'm getting pretty psyched up about it!
my theme is: fears and tears
(which i will have no problem with since this past year has been a serious bruiser). i think it will be specifically titled:
fears and tears – the infertile years.

then after january 31st my sketchbook along with thousands of others
will take a tour traveling from libraries to galleries and little pop-up shops
all around the world for the masses to view.

happy thursday friends!
well, the day is almost over and i still didn't get to craft it up like i planned
but i did get to put up a new inspirational/reminder print for anyone working their tail off trying to make something of themselves...

inspired by the tao te ching (translated by stephen mitchell) – one of my favorite books when i'm feeling like i need some direction. every chapter has such wisdom and i feel comfort in all of lao tzu's words. i really recommend the pocket version – so it can go anywhere with you!

hopefully blending it with some folk-style beauty will help bring the wisdom of lao tzu into 2011. crazy to think his words from 604 BC are still being put into practice – now that's some history.

oh and i almost forgot! can't wait to finish this project i'm working on...
it's going to be a ketubah! (traditional jewish wedding "agreement")

aggggg i can't wait – it's going to be be sooooo beautiful!

just a look at the planter garden this year...

since our garden is STILL up for debate
(i say flowers and picnic table - hubs says mostly garden)
our little planter garden on the deck will have to do for now. and i might just stick with this forever since it requires no weeding. yup you heard right, NO WEEDING! ain't that the tops?

last year i did similar groupings of pretty plants and veggies.

this year i've got green onions going next to cantaloupe! crazy right? well, i'll probably have to do some switching once things get bigger but it's working out great so far. hopefully i'll be growing the melons down the side of the deck... i'll let you know how that works out.

out in the non-garden i got a blueberry bush popping.
let's hope the birds don't get them before i do!

plus, i was really lucky this winter keeping all my house plants alive indoors! FINALLY!
in the past i've killed so many plants just a few months after bringing them in. i think i'd over water and then under water - which made them very sad. plus i don't think they ever had enough light. this time i managed to water appropriately (less at first and then progressively more) and get them enough sun so only just a few were lost.

here's a few beauties...

and super potent citronella that loved the big pot i put it in last year.
perfect deck buddy when the bugs come out - just pick and rub all over!

also, last year on my walk i found wild chamomile and brought it home.
it loves our red rock driveway and has been spreading everywhere.

back again with the artstar details!
as usual, the 8th annual artstar craft bazaar was amazing. all the great philly folk came out in the rain on saturday – skipping around in their golashes – and we got so lucky with sun all day on sunday, hooray! this is by far my most favorite craft show. the girls who run it are soooo awesome and there's always such a nice, friendly vibe. people help each other and happy volunteers are always there to truck your stuff back and forth. plus pina coladas and fantastic oatmeal/cranberry cookies... what could be better!?

wow-wee it's been a while!

sorry for my little disappearance over the last week –
a lot has been going on and i can barely keep up...

first off, we got our bees!
2 sundays ago we picked up our order at the LCCC campus. it was really awesome to see all the bees that came up from georgia in a little horse trailer...

with about 20 bees on the outside of the box keegan asked me to hold them for the trip back home and my eyes must've shown my utter fear.
i get crazy when there is one little bee buzzing around in the car, let alone 20-30!
luckily he brushed off the excess girls and let me drive while he kept them safe.

when we got home HM came over and helped him insert the queen and release the rest into the hive. my heart raced while they did their thing. (sorry for the blown-out photos. i could barely get a good shot since i still can't seem to figure out this white balance on a super sunny day.)

here's the queen in her little chamber! (she's the big one with the white dot)
over the next few days her servants take care of her as they eat their way out to be greeted by the rest of the hive...

kritter was really inquisitive and would occasionally snap around the air trying to get them in her teeth. i stayed back and watched through the lens mostly.

after a couple days they seem to be hard at work and happy.
queen bee is out of her box and the hive is at a light hum all day long.
so, after all that it wasn't so bad.
no jumping in the pond... yet!

with all the things that can go wrong like mites and mold
we need all the luck we can get for this new hive.
go little bees – i would surely like to eat your honey!

at least for now i know they have
a happy home – just like us.

more tomorrow on art star and my perky little planter garden!

saturday we bummed around shopping for parts for the john deer and stopped in at a little antique shop. first, i found this crazy awesome needle point that exemplifies all my stitching dreams.

i love how it's half realistic and half folk style.

then i found some great books illustrated by walter seaton.
love, love, love, his style!

and lastly i really like the idea of these...

half wood carving, half painting. so nice!

afterwards we went down to the bowers supply shop and had 50 cent hot dogs. what a saturday, right!? ahhhhh berks county, i love you.

also, i've had a couple inspiring customers lately asking for really great custom ideas and love them so much i may just have to offer it to the public!

this customer asked for a great swedish proverb to be fit into the classic homelove layout along with her friends names and wedding date. so nice, right? also, she requested using the america (north) color palette which i think turned out so perfectly. thanks, heidi! xoxoxo

and then this cool little lady asked for my each day calendar to be turned into a date marker of their anniversary. we circled their wedding day and added a little K+ G= LOVE at the bottom.

well, it looks like if this is going to be the best year ever

it's also going to be the year of facing all of my fears.
this weekend the delivery came and although a little late – it has begun.
life with bees.

i say facing my fears because i have always had a serious fear of bees and now i'll have to face it head on. i'm really trying to replace the negative images i have in my mind with images like the one above. but right now, i just can't seem to get that scene from candy man where they come crawling out of his mouth out of my brain!

yup, that one.

anyway! it was nice to see my hubs, bro, and nephew build the boxes ...

here it is complete and ready for it's home outside.

everything's so beautiful and still... for now.

the queen is on her way and will make her debut any day now...
i'm sure i'll be fine. and i bet i'll be loving them up and saying how cool they are soon enough... but until then, the neighbors will be getting a kick out of me running for my life and jumping into the pond every other day.

hey folks!
just wanted to show a little craft project that i just completed over here...

so, we bought the house with this old whirlpool refrigerator that has definitely seen better days. other than it being old and rather small – it works great. unfortunately, the WORST part about it was it's outer looks. bluuuh. it had rust spots all over and even a sweet rusty hand swipe that just looked down right foul (as you can see picture below)...

totally appetizing right?

so, i sanded that puppy down, gave it 2 coats of chalkboard paint and
~ whaaaalaaa ~
it feels like a new fridge and makes me oh so very happy!

i would recommend this project for anybody
with a raggedy old fridge that just won't die.
make it over and don't forget to add the love.

morning all!

check out these sweet and lovable homespun chicken pincushions from chezsucrechez! so wonderful and adorable. i really need to learn how to sew so i have an excuse. hmm maybe i'll just get them for looks –

and just in time since most folks are probably ordering or finding out about their spring chicks right about now - including me!

over the past couple years we've learned a thing or two about having hens so we plan make this year the best ever by doing all the right things. such as: 1) getting chicks and raising them with us. (since when you don't you can't really be sure what they've been eating - and they just don't love you like they do when you raise them up) 2) procuring the right variety for our land (flighty and hardy) and 3) finally - we're moving the coop up into the garden so they'll be close to the house and out of fox territory.

although it's crazy snowy out there i'm loving it
since my hubs gets to work from home.
it's crazy, we spend so much time together and i still can't get enough –
plus, it's just so much fun to yell crazy things to him from the studio and take turns putting wood on the fire... ahhhhh i really can't complain about anything in my life right now !

wow! it's really here, folks.

christmas is just days away and i've had barely enough time to get ready for it. the biz has been so busy this holiday season so check out my super simple decorations for this year –

popped a cluster of candy cane holly in the wreath above the mantle,

tucked some glass balls under my glass top,

and went around stuffing greens into ever corner!

even though on the inside i like to keep it feeling like it's summer all year long.

hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving!!

this time of year always makes me want to snuggle in and make crafts all day... so, here are two that i've found recently that meet my crafty criteria: inexpensive, easy and fun!

first are these manu necklaces

(which are essentially paper clips wrapped in colored tape!)

i found these and many others on vintage mint. check there for many more ridiculously great craft ideas and more about the necklaces...

and of course some lovely paper trees by martha stewart

can't wait to make some for my little terrariums!
